Design Communication ARC1713

This module aims to let us be able to :
1.Describe and identify the different types of architectural design communication and their roles in conveying architectural ideas, forms and space.

2.Illustrate architectural forms and spaces through visualization and expression of space in the form of free-hand drawing.
3.Analyze visual information using 2D and 3D technical data wings and architectural model which demonstrate the ideas of space and form.
4.Produce architectural ideas and designs through 2D and 3D technical drawings.
5.Apply learnt skills and techniques in producing visual materials for design project and portfolio.

Project 1A:On Site Sketching

The main idea of this project is to introduce us to visualization and expression of space through on-site sketching activity.

Hence,we are required to engage with the site chosen by experiencing it through a spatial sequence and then produce four A4 sketches of two interior and two exterior spaces capturing solid and voids, details, landscaping and scale and proportion.

The following are my final works for this project:
Outdoor On Site Sketching
Outdoor On Site Sketching
Indoor On Site Sketching
Indoor On Site Sketching

Throughout this project,I was able to improve my ability to capture every details and notion of spaces in architectural and present them in the form of sketching.Besides that,I also realized the importance of  sketching and rendering as having a perfect sketching and rendering techniques could make a drawing to look alive. This was why our drawings were ammended from time to time to reach the satisfactory level.

Learning Outcomes of this project:
1.To understand the notion of space in architecture.
2.To develop skills in visualizing of space through observation and perception of a given site.
3.To develop skills in sketching as a mode of communication.

Project 1B:Tonal Values

Here for this project,it required us to produce four A4 sketches based on tonal values using different medias such as cross-hatching,scribbling,stippling and also hatching.

The following are my final works for this project:
Cross-Hatching
Stippling
Hatching
Scribbling

After completing this assignment,I was able to improve my skills in the various types of hatching.Besides that,my ability to illustrate depth and tone has been improved, too. The most important one was,my comprehension of space have developed in a well manner and at the same time,my sketching techniques has improved.

Learning Outcomes of this project:
1.To understand the notion of space in architecture.
To develop skills in communicating the above in various tonal and depth values.
To develop various techniques of hatching through different medium.

Project 2A:Orthographic Drawings

For this project,we were required to produce a presentation board which included of a floor plan,a site plan, four elevations and two sections of a given building-Barcelona Pavilion by Mies Van Der Rohe.We were to do our own researches in order to get the proper dimensions and materiality of it.

Following is my final work for this project:
Orthographic Projections of Barcelona Pavilion

Throughout this project,I was able to manipulate various media and resources to get the sufficient information for myself. And also,by preparing this presentation board,it helped me to improve my ability to produce a systematic works and sharpen my technical drawing skills.

Learning Outcomes of this project:
1.Demonstrate drafting skills in modern and traditional methods of architectural drawing.
2.Record and present clear and legible architectural information manually.
3.Identify and apply architectural conventions and symbols.
4.Demonstrate in pencil and ink examples of:
    -line types
    -line weights
    -line quality
    -hand lettering

Project 2B:Axonometric Drawings

Using the information which we have gathered in project 2A,we were required to produce a sectional axonometric drawings showing both exterior and interior of Barcelona Pavilion at a scale of 1:100.

Following is my final work for this project:
Sectional and Exploded Axonometric Projection of Barcelona Pavilion

Throughout this assignment,I was able to express the architectural details and spatial ideas of Barcelona Pavilion in 3D.Besides that,it also helped me to look into the materiality of a space and how these materials actually related to each other.Of course, this assignment turned me into a more observant person, too.Any small mistakes were not allowed to be made, otherwise the measurements wouldn't be accurate and the drawings would just become imperfect.

Learning Outcomes of this project:
1.Ability to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension,in the format of an axonometric projection.
2.Understanding of what axonometric projections are,how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation.
3.Ability to produce legible architectural drawings.

Project 2C:Perspective Drawings

This assignment designed to introduce perspective as a mode of communication in architectural.Hence we were required to produce an exterior(two-point)perspective followed by one sectional interior(one-point)perspective of Barcelona Pavilion,by using the information which we have gathered in Project 2A.

Following is my final work for this project:
One Point and Two Point Perspective of Barcelona Pavilion

While completing this assignment,my ability to express spatial ideas in 3D form has been developed well.At the same time,my skills in drawing and composition, and creativity has improved.Last but not least,my understanding towards the process of creating perspectives was clear.

Learning Outcomes of this project:
1.Ability to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension,in the format of one-point and two-point perspectives.
2.Understanding of what perspectives(and its different types)are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation.
3.Ability to produce legible architectural drawings with creative intent.

  1. Hi,

My name is Joshua and I would like to ask where did you find the drawings for Mies van der rohe's Barcelona Pavilion?
