Methods of Documentation and Measured Drawing ARC1215

This module aims to let us be able to :
1.Identify and classify architectural historic structure.
2.Recognize and recall architectural historic structure documentation method.
3.Recommend the appropriate method of architectural historic documentation.
4.Explain the application of architectural historic documentation.

5.Recognize and recall techniques of measured drawing and documentation.
6.Explain the as-built constructions, architectural details and elements.
7.Describe architectural cultural heritage.
8.Execute fieldwork and hands-on measurements.
9.Translate measured data into scale drawings.

So, basically for this module, it is divided into three main parts, where the first project is an individual work - SKETCHBOOK AND JOURNAL. While the second project is MEASURED DRAWINGS AND MODEL and the third one is BUILDING REPORT. Both of the latter projects are all in group work. Hence, a great cooperation effort among the group members are needed to complete all the group works.

This time, we are assigned to measure and document a historical building, which known as Istana Bandar or Alaeddin Palace. Istana Bandar is an old building which located at Kampung Sungai Langat, Banting, Selangor and have a history value of 115 years.

Project 1 : SKETCHBOOK AND JOURNAL

This is an individual assignment where we are required to sketch and document the physical and intangible qualities of Istana Bandar as well as its site context. At the final submission, 20 pieces of sketches that give a strong idea of Istana Bandar have to be produced.

For one's acknowledgement, the main idea of this project is to train us to be more observant to our surroundings as in the future, when we work in the architecture field, we always have to be attentive to our surroundings to produce works which meet clients' fulfillment.

The following are my final artworks for this project:

Front facade of Istana Bandar

An arch which located in Hall 1 of Istana Bandar. [showing CHARACTERISTICS aspect]

Throughout this project, I have learned to document all the information in a systematic way for the ease of the readers. Besides that, it also enables me to manipulate various media and resources to get sufficient information for myself as we are required to produce not only drawings. We have to prepare the proper captions for all the artworks as well. Hence, at the same time, architectural historic structure has been  well identified, classified and described.

Learning Outcomes of this project:
1.Identify and classify architectural historic structure.
2.Recognize and recall architectural historic structure documentation method.
3.Describe architectural cultural heritage.
4.Relate how architecture influence its bigger context e.g. the urban setting, and its inhabitants.
5.Capture the tangible and intangible essence that is contained within the architecture realm.

Project 2 : MEASURED DRAWINGS & MODEL

The main idea of this second project is to improve our skills in producing scaled drawings using auto-CAD application fluently and at the same time, motivate our creativity and workmanship in producing model of appointed historic building.

Hence, at the final submission, we are required to hand in sets of scaled drawings (which include the key plan, location plan, site plan incorporating the roof plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, site sections, exploded isometric/axonometric) and also a physical model of Istana Bandar to show its structure as well as its detailing.

The following are some of the hand drawn measured data on the site:
Hand drawn measured data (1)
Hand drawn measured data (2)
Hand drawn measured data (3)
Hand drawn measured data (4)
Hand drawn measured data of column location.

Here's the access to the compilation of whole Istana Bandar PDF scaled drawings, Istana Bandar Jugra scaled drawings

Move on to the model making part, my group successfully produced a model of Istana Bandar in scale 1:100 using Balsa wood. And, the most important thing is, everything is in handmade without using any laser cutting method. Here is the final look of it:

Throughout this project, I realized that I have developed more understandings towards every structures of Istana Bandar. It also helps turning me into a more observant person as any small mistakes are not allowed in this project. If there are any mistakes occur, it's impossible for my CAD team to finish all the scaled drawings in time. Furthermore, for the model making part, a great communication and cooperation efforts did involve in my group. As the sayings go "When the spiders unite, they can tie up a lion". All of my group members speak up their opinions and ideas, and also under the sturdy guidance of our tutor, it helps in speeding up our model making. And of course, all of us are in a cooperative state. In all words, many hands did make light work. Teamwork makes our group bonding better, knowing that we can achieve more together than alone!

Learning Outcomes of this project:
1.Recommend the appropriate method of architectural historic documentation.
2.Recognize and recall techniques of measured drawing and documentation.
3.Explain the as-built building constructions, architectural details and elements.
4.Interpret historic architectural element, structure and building.
5.Execute fieldwork and hands-on measurement exercise.
6.Translate measured data into scaled drawings.

Project 3 : BUILDING REPORT

This third project focused on elaborating on the significance of the building being measured from various aspects such as architectural, historical and cultural. Through the documentation of Istana Bandar, I can describe this architectural cultural heritage well.

For this project, it is divided into four smaller parts which are:
(A)The report that requires 3000-6000 words
(B)Visual and verbal presentation that includes a video
(C)A photobook
(D)A website

Feel free to read my group report here, Istana Bandar Jugra

And, watch our journey throughout five-days on site experience, Moments at Istana Bandar Jugra

Don't remember to flip though our photobook, Photobook of Istana Bandar Jugra

Lastly, browse our website here to see every details, Website of Istana Bandar Jugra
Introduction of this module, history of Istana Bandar, and our work throughout this project, all are included in this website. :)

Throughout this project, I found that it is a series of work which require us to do many researches to get as much information for ourselves. Apart from that, locals in Jugra, especially the elders who were familiar with Istana Bandar also helped to provide the information that we could not find via online resources. Like what have been mentioned earlier before this, to complete this project, teamwork did played an important role. While for the individual component, I feel that my recording skills, documenting skills and presentation skills improved a lot because amendments and tutorials were given from time to time to fulfill our improvement space. In a nutshell, after completing this project, I have 100% of understandings towards Istana Bandar.

Learning Outcomes of this project:
1.Produce a report on the buildings highlighting its importance and historical significance.
2.Recognize and recall architectural historic structure documentation method.
3.Recommend the appropriate method of architectural historic documentation.
4.Explain the application of architectural historic documents.
5.Describe architectural cultural heritage.
6.Explain the management of architectural historic documents.
7.Understand the relationship between architecture and the significance of the building as well as its inhabitation.

To sum up everything in this short semester(Methods of Documentation and Measured Drawing), I would just say that I really feel thankful and grateful, as I have met a team of awesome people and cool lecturers. They have taught me a lot of new stuffs which are so much beneficial to me in the future. Pictures and words just couldn't express my feelings towards them. So, to end this post, here comes the last picture of group photo to commemorate our moments together. THANK YOU EVERYONE!  :)

THE BEST TEAM EVER!   :)
